A: (Answer coutesy of Paul Ruel , Alamo, CA) Hi. Gower Champion was a dancer who eventually directed and choreographed a number of movies. He's probably best know for his staging and work in Hello Dolly, but, the thing he did that is special for me (and is the reason I am providing this background information) was a movie entitled Bye Bye Birdie. This is one of the strangest movies to have come out of the early 60s. Thei actors and actresses are all pretty well-known (Ann-Margret, Janet Leigh, Dick Van Dyke, Maureen Stapleton, Paul Lynde), the screenplay was from a play that had been being performed for-*ever*, but it had a bizarre mix of bright color and tunes and - most notably - really "out there" choreography. If you can rent a copy of this movie, you should. Make sure you at least watch the dance tune [I've Got] A Lotta Livin' To Do -- the dancing is priceless. Why would this be funny to a 1971 audience at the Troubadour? First, you should see the movie. Then...there are probably a dozen reasons. Most of the audience was probably under the influence of alcohol or pot or both, so this would make giggling more likely; also, any time you mention an obscure, buti notable individual in a nightclub, you are sure to get one or two pseudos who feel compelled to laugh at the "inside joke" they may not really get. However, sociology and psychology aside, the main reason would be that the Champion images were so "clean cut" and "middle America" that the dry satirical M.O. of Dan Hicks would have been the last place one would expect to find a cheery Gower Champion tune. I hope this helps! :o) Question #11 Q: Is Dan receiving royalties from the Japansese re-release of IHOB? A: Question #12 Q: What is it with Dan and the dummies? A: < reserved for answer> Question #13 Q: What the name of the dog posing with Dan on the cover of "Original Recordings"? A: Fetch ("3/4 blind, incest child", as described by Dan). Question #14 Q: Does Dan have any children? A: Someone met someone who said that Dan fathered a child by a woman in Ireland, but other than that possiblity, no mention has been made of any little Hickses. If Dan has kids, he's not tellin'.... Question #15 Q: Is Dan married? A: Yes (sorry, girls), he is married to the former Clare Wasserman, who is somehow related to bassist Rob Wasserman , with whom Dan cut a song on Rob's album "Duets". Last I heard she has her own booking agency and takes an active role in Dan's career.
